The easy answer is, it isn't an easy question. There are so many arguments over the use of Defragging, it would take pages here, and probably end up in yet another argument.
The bottom line is that our belief is that constant defragging can degrade your harddrive, in which case eventually it will simply fail.
Having said that, if you do so wisely, it can increase the speed of your system, but don't do it often. Our high use machines are done roughly every six months.
To do a simple defrag, click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.
Click on Analyze and wait for it to do so. A good rule of thumb is if this process takes more than a few minutes, you probably do need to run a defrag.
If this comes up saying No need to defrag, trust it. Most of the time, it will say you need to run it.
Some things to keep in mind.
- Don't use the pc while this is running, it will restart the process over and over again.
- If possible, have the machine connected to a surge protector or an Uninterruptible Power Source.
- Do a restart after running the process and see if it's any better.
